An advanced electronic signature has to meet four properties: it is uniquely linked to the signer, capable of identifying them, created using data the signer can use under their sole control, and linked to the signed data so that any later change is detectable.

A standard signature is enough evidence for most contracts. Advanced signature adds a verified, unique link to the signer's identity and tamper-evidence on the document itself, which some counterparties and regulations require by name.
